WorkFirst

The WorkFirst Team at Edmonds Community College believes in the Washington state goal for welfare recipients and low-income working parents: "A job, a better job, a better life."

One of the best ways to reach this goal is through free education and training. At Edmonds Community College TANF* recipients and low-income parents can receive the skills they need to make “a better life.”

Qualified low-income parents receive assistance in reaching career goals through short-term vocational training programs. Students learn technical skills, career management techniques and receive job search assistance plus certificates of completion. Customized skills training lasts up to 22 weeks and prepares students for entry-level jobs  in health care occupations, medical office technology, office skills technology, business management skills, construction industry, computers, electronics and more!

WorkFirst financial aid pays for tuition, books and fees for classes, including those offered at the college’s Business and Training Center. Students must be receiving TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) or be an income-eligible, working parent. Call our WorkFirst phone number 425-640-1686 to see if your qualify. We are located in the Workforce Development Center, located in the Maltby Building. We offer a variety of training and education programs, including customized job skills training programs.

Additional information about FSET eligibility at EDCC:

  • The FSET program at EDCC determines the number of potential students each quarter and screens based on several factors:  Program of interest, support services needed, and ability of the student to access other resources, including federal financial aid.  FSET emphasizes a path to employment; the FSET case manager will assist in assessing employment strategies.

  • The FSET program emphasizes that students choose programs which provide the skills and training to enter high-demand, high-wage employment.  Generally certificate programs which can be completed prior to a 2-year ATA degree are preferable.  Transfer students to 4-year colleges or universities are not eligible for FSET at the present time.

  • ALL FSET students are required to apply for Financial Aid in order to be eligible for FSET. If a student cannot obtain financial aid, FSET can assist with tuition and books for a period of time until eligibility is gained or regained.

  • Support Services offered by FSET at this time: Childcare, gas cards (with proof of insurance), transfer bus tickets (for Everett residents), EDPASS, testing fees, application fees, tuition and books*, clothing vouchers during final quarter of program (for interviews), and other emergency support as necessary (based on funding availability). On-staff job developer also available to assist with resume preparation, interview techniques, and job placement.

  • SCREENING AND INTAKE SCHEDULE: Begins approximately 30-45 days prior to the start of each quarter.  Check back frequently for dates of scheduled FSET Open-House or Orientation Sessions!

Call the Workforce Development Center for further information. The FSET Information Line is 425.640.1727.
