Campus Sustainability Day (Download Event Flyer)
Thursday, October 29th 11:00AM-3:00PM
Snohomish Hall

October is a busy month for sustainability. There will be much going on in communities across the nation and even the world! The 350 organization is planning a worldwide event, International Day of Climate Action, on October 24th with a corresponding Teach-In at colleges and universities set for October 22nd. The Society for Colleges and University Planners (SCUP) is planning their 7th annual Campus Sustainability Day on October 21st.
The EdCC Center for Service Learning will be organizing an event for the 19th annual Make a Difference Day on October 24th: Partner with People for Puget Sound for a day at the beach removing invasive ivy to help protect the natural habitat at Picnic Point County Park in Edmonds (10am-2pm). For information please contact: Amy Phillips at amy.phillips@edcc.edu .
.
We encourage our campus community to engage in service on Saturday, October 24th with the Center for Service Learning. Then we will mark the both Campus Sustainability Day and the Teach-In related to the International Day of Climate Action with our own event on Thursday, October 29th. Rather than simply talking about climate change, we will engage the community in a conversation about what we are actually doing and what we should be doing about climate change and sustainability on our campus.
Schedule for the Day:
Sustainability Fair, 11:00AM-2:00PM, Snohomish Hall Lobby
Interested in green programs or taking classes that involve sustainability? Interested in seeing what actions some of our departments are taking to become more sustainable? Departments such as the LEAF school, materials science, hospitality/tourism, occupational, safety & health, energy management, intensive esl, construction industry training, office of diversity affairs, social justice/peace club, awakening the dreamer training, climate commitment information, college signage information among others will be represented.
Check out some of our partners working in our community including the WSU Extension of Snohomish County Beach Watchers, educating on how to become better Puget Sound Stewards, and Master Gardeners, providing information on rain gardens at this event . The newly formed Carbon Masters™ (also from WSU Extension in partnership with the University of Washington) program will help you assess your carbon footprint. The mission of the Carbon Masters™ program is to engage and train volunteers, partners and stakeholders on current climate change research and public policy initiatives that inspire behavior change and greater civic engagement.
Sustainability at EdCC: Operations & Curriculum, 12:30PM-1:30PM, Snohomish Hall 304A, Cascade Conference Room
Hear from the Sustainability Researcher about how sustainability is integrated into EdCC, then see it in action! Hear from an interdisciplinary faculty panel about how sustainability can be integrated into curriculum, both the successes and challenges, starting from developing the curriculum to implementing it into classroom projects.
World Cafe Community Forum, 2:00PM-3:00PM, Snohomish Hall 304A, Cascade Conference Room
Everyone plays a part in making EdCC sustainable. Using a World Cafe format, where small groups consider certain questions, generate some more ideas with fellow community members about working towards our climate commitment goals and creating a sustainable institution.
Eco Encore Listing Party, Service Learning Project, 6- 9:30pm,
Alderwood Hall 105
“Eco Encore raises funds for environmental organizations in the Pacific Northwest through the online resale of books, CDs, DVDs and recent software donated by individuals and institutions across the country, while increasing awareness of reuse as a vital practice for resource conservation.”
Students will list and price donated books and media, the proceeds of which are donated to environmental nonprofits, at the same time preventing used books from becoming part of the 1,600 lbs of trash each American produces each year. October 29th is Campus Sustainability Day - let's do our part!
We will be using the computers in the computer lab in Alderwood 105 - if you don't have a computer log-on please get one or let me know. Students are encouraged to bring their CDs/MP3 players - the team that is ahead in dollars raised gets to pick the music! Please RSVP to anna.simpson@edcc.edu.
