Sustainability Initiative
Earth Day 2008
The entire community was involved as Edmonds Community College celebrated Earth Day 2008 throughout the month of April and May with a full roster of events.

This year, Kurt Hoelting kicked off the month by talking about his experiences "Circling Home" using only alternate means of transportation (no car).
We held a Sustainable Solutions Teach-In during the week of Earth Day where instructors explored issues of sustainability with their classes. The Horticulture Department hosted a recycling event for plastic pots, flats, etc., as well as led folks on a tour of the rain catchment system at the greenhouse. Janelle Hansen, who went through a rigorous training program led by former Vice-President Al Gore, spoke to the campus community about climate change and next steps.

Michael Wewer speaks about exploring old growth forests using photography
We hosted an art reception, an environmental film festival, and lectures by Deborah Koons Garcia who spoke about the future of food and Ann Pancake who read from her writings about mining in Appalachian rural communities. We also held a panel of international students who spoke about sustainability issues from a global perspective.
Tim Hohn, Horticulture Instructor, led the children at the Center for Families facility on campus in releasing ladybugs, beneficial insects that rid plants of pests naturally.

And finally, President Jack Oharah signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, signifying Edmonds Community College's long-term commitment to operationalizing and teaching sustainability.
