What is the Sustainability Initiative?

Sustainability first became an institutional priority when it was incorporated into the college’s philosophy statement in 2006. At that point, the Sustainability Initiative was born, and a Sustainability Council was convened to rally and promote the efforts of the initiative. In 2008, former college President, Jack Oharah, signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, committing the college to a path of becoming carbon neutral. In 2012, the college underwent a process of revising its mission; sustainability is now a stated college value and is incorporated in the newly developed strategic plan.

Sustainability Initiative Mission Statement: In fulfilling the Edmonds Community College Mission, the Sustainability Initiative strives to infuse sustainable practice throughout all aspects of the college's operation and facilitates preparation of our students and community for sustainable careers, citizenship and quality of life.

What do we mean by sustainability?

We like the Washington Center's Curriculum for the Bioregion definition:

“Sustainability encompasses four intertwined ideals: economic wellness, social justice, human health, and biodiversity and ecological integrity. It is a systemic concept, relating to the continuity of economic, social, institutional, and environmental aspects of human society.”

What does a sustainable college do?

It helps students become more environmentally literate and motivates them to seek environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable practices while modeling these same values and practices in its operation.
