What is the Sustainability Initiative?
Edmonds Community College incorporated Sustainability into its Mission & Philosophy Statement in June 2006:
“Edmonds Community College is a community of learners, which upholds integrity and high educational standards and affirms the value of lifelong learning and sustainability."
Mission Statement
In fulfilling the Edmonds Community College Mission and Philosophy, the Sustainability Initiative strives to infuse sustainable practice throughout all aspects of the college's operation and facilitates preparation of our students and community for sustainable careers, citizenship and quality of life.
What do we mean by sustainability?
We like the definition developed by the Washington Center “Curriculum for the Bioregion Initiative":
“Sustainability encompasses four intertwined ideals: economic wellness, social justice, human health, and biodiversity and ecological integrity. It is a systemic concept, relating to the continuity of economic, social, institutional, and environmental aspects of human society.”
What does a sustainable college do?
It helps students become more environmentally literate and motivates them to seek environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable practices while modeling these same values and practices in its operation.
