Center for Service Learning

The Center for Service-Learning at Edmonds Community College provides support for service-learning courses and events at the college and in the community.

The National Service-Learning Clearinghouse describes service learning as "a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities."

Accomplishments and Support

In the past five years, the center has hosted thirteen full-time AmeriCorps members and provided $250,000 in part-time AmeriCorps education awards to 200 students. The Center has brought over $300,000 in grants to the college last year alone, hosted four regional service-learning workshops, and supported an average of 525 service-learning students who provided nearly 30,000 hours of service to 57 campus and community partners per year.

These efforts have been recognized nationally with the following awards:

• Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award from Campus Compact
• Service-Learning Collaboration Award from the Community College National Center for Community Engagement.

Support for these programs comes from Washington Campus Compact, American Association of Community Colleges, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Edmonds CC Foundation, and the Arts, Culture, and Civic Engagement Initiative at Edmonds CC.

Learn and Serve Environmental Anthropology Field (LEAF) School

Learn and Serve Environmental Anthropology Field (LEAF) School is a year-round program offered in partnership through Edmonds and Everett Community Colleges. The human ecology courses, ANTH 201 -203, meet 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays each quarter of the year.

During the summer of 2012, the archaeology field methods course, ANTH 270, will meet 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, July 5-23. The archaeology lab methods course, ANTH 271, will meet 8:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 24-Aug. 23, in MLT 220. Students in the archaeology courses will be participating in an excavation at Japanese Gulch in Mukilteo.

Students from other campuses are welcome to enroll in LEAF School courses. Most of our activities occur off campus and we take vans together from campus to field sites. To join, beginning students should enroll in ANTH 201, 270 and/or 271. Visit www.edcc.edu/enroll to sign up.

The Retention Project

A Washington Campus Compact AmeriCorps Program

A Washington Campus Compact program that supports the success and retention of disadvantaged youth and first-generation college students through mentoring, tutoring, and service-learning opportunities. We have 3 positions here on campus supporting the LEAF School, TRiO Student Support Services, and the Center for Service-Learning.

TRIO Student Support Services

Through the Retention Project, Laura works with students that attend Edmonds Community College, most of whom are members of TRiO, a student support program that serves low-income, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities.  Within TRiO, she will implement a peer-mentoring program, provide a workshop that will help students transfer to four-year schools, and work with community agencies and college faculty to provide students with opportunities to engage in service learning.

LEAF School

Through the Retention Project, Marshall works with students that enroll in Anthropology classes here on campus, specifically the LEAF School, a series of three Anthrology classes in Human Ecology, where students work with local non-profits, businesses, governments, and tribes.  He manages the peer mentoring program where new students of the LEAF School (Anth. 201) are mentored by those enrolled in Anth. 202 or 203.

Center for Service-Learning, K-12 Mentoring Program

Through the Retention Project, Tony works with K-12 schools to provide mentoring opportunities for middle and high school students.  We work with Edmonds School District with their After School Tutoring Programs, and their Indian Education Tutoring Program.  He also supports service-learning projects with different schools across the state, including Everett School District, Kettle Falls School District, and more.

Washington Service Corps

Funded by the Washington State Employment Secruity Department, Bill, our Washington Service Corps AmeriCorps Member is focusing on increasing service-learning into STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) disciplines in partnership with the RISE and MESA Programs on campus.  He also supports our Green Team Student Sustainability Advocates, who are dedicated to providing education to the campus about sustainable practices.
