Instructor's Expectations
Class Participation
Class participation is an integral part of college and most faculty require students to participate in classroom discussions. The students in the classroom can range in age from 16 to 60 and students need to be prepared for a variety of perspectives and opinions.
Class Pace
The speed at which college classes are taught is faster than at high school. For instance, a high school math class, which is usually taught in one year at the high school, may be taught within ten (10) weeks at the college. Because of limited class time, students should seek out the instructor for additional help immediately after class.
Class Size
Classes can vary in size from 15 to 50 students with an average class size of about 25 students. This class size makes it possible for instructors to give some individual attention to students who need additional assistance, though students requiring a lot of individual attention should meet with the instructor outside of class.
Attendance
Most Edmonds Community College classes have clearly defined attendance policies that are part of the instructors' grading policies. Most instructors will not excuse Running Start students for absences related to high school activities such as homecoming assemblies, sporting events, exam schedules, graduation practices, etc. It is the student's responsibility to be prepared each day for class and meet all deadlines. Some faculty give pop quizzes and expect all papers to be turned in on time with no make-up possibilities.
