Campus food drive for Volunteers of America underway in October

Print

Release Date: October 10th, 2012
Edmonds Community College is holding a food drive for the Volunteers of America Western Washington food banks. Throughout the month of October, donations can be dropped off on the first floor of Clearview Hall, Mountlake Terrace Hall, Snohomish Hall, Lynnwood Hall, and the Triton Student Center, College Store entrance. The food drive will help gather food at a time of greatest need for local food banks and it's also a friendly competition with Everett Community College, which is also holding a food drive this month.

Cash donations will also be accepted. Bring checks made payable to "Volunteers of America Western Washington" to Nettie Rothstein in the Business Office.

"Did you know that the May food drive by the Post Office is when local food banks receive most of the food they distribute the rest of each year? Apart from that one major drive, there are no other major campaigns they can count on. So we asked when, during the year, would it be most beneficial to hold a large food drive and were told that October, just before the holidays, would be a huge help," said Edmonds Community College Vice President of Finance and Operations, Kevin McKay.

The VOA Everett Food Bank serves more than 3,000 families each month. Everett Food Bank needs these nutritious foods:
• canned meats (i.e., tuna, chicken and salmon)
• canned and boxed meals (i.e., soup, chili, stew, macaroni and cheese)
• peanut butter
• canned or dried beans and peas (i.e., black, pinto, lentils)
• pasta, rice, cereal
• canned fruits
• fruit juice (canned, plastic or boxed)
• baby food

To ensure food safety, Everett Food Bank cannot use:
• rusty or unlabeled cans
• perishable items
• homemade items
• noncommercial canned or packaged items
• alcoholic beverages, mixes or soda
• open or used items

If you donate glass products, please box or bag them separately and label the box or bag “GLASS” on all sides.
