One member from the Washington State academic team will be selected to The All-USA Academic Team for Community, Technical and Junior Colleges. That student will be named the state’s New Century Scholar. The annual academic recognition is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, USA Today and the American Association of Community Colleges.
Last year, Edmonds Community College students Long Le, 20, and Lisa Quirk, 29, both of Lynnwood, were named to the All-Washington Academic Team made up of 62 of the state’s top community and technical college scholars. They were honored for their scholarship, leadership, and community service at a ceremony in March in Olympia.
They each received a $750 scholarship provided by KeyBank and the Northwest Education Loan Association (NELA). All four-year colleges in the state also offered a scholarship to All-Washington Academic Team members who chose to continue studies at their schools.
Le also received the The Boeing Co. scholarship from the Edmonds Community College Foundation. She planned to obtain her bachelor’s degree at University of Washington and then go on for her MBA after completing her Associate of Arts at Edmonds CC.
Quirk is an alumna of the Learn-and-serve Environmental Anthropology Field (LEAF) School, a series of three Edmonds CC anthropology classes with a service-learning focus. She planned to pursue a degree in anthropology at the University of Washington after earning her Associate of Arts degree.
