Edmonds Community College Presidential Search begins

Be part of the process of selecting our next leader. Community and technical college board to meet March 17-18, discuss operating budget
Posted Mar 16 - OLYMPIA, Wash. – The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will meet on Wednesday, March 17, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Thursday, March 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the State Board office in Olympia. During the two-day meeting, the Board will discuss development and framework of the two-year college system’s 2011-13 operating budget.

Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance suports aerospace students with new scholarship
Posted Mar 16 - The Pacific Northwest Aerospace Alliance (PNAA) has established an Edmonds Community College Foundation scholarship to support students studying in fields related to the aerospace industry.
Educator's legacy will continue to inspire students: Scholarship created in teacher’s name
Posted Mar 16 - A scholarship has been created in memory of lifelong educator Mary Pat Dennis-Andre who taught at Edmonds Community College for 18 years and who died of cancer on October 20, 2009 at the age of 57. Joe Andre made a donation to the Edmonds Community College Foundation to create an endowed scholarship in his wife’s name. The monies will be invested to create a permanent fund, and the scholarships will be awarded annually so long as funds are available.
Edmonds Community College President Jack Oharah announces plans to retire
Posted Mar 12 - Jack Oharah, who has led Edmonds Community College for nearly 15 years, announced his retirement today. The college will begin its search for a new president in April. Oharah is expected to stay on board through the end of 2010. The college will conduct a nationwide search for a new president this spring. A search committee appointed by the college trustees will help select finalists for the position over the summer.
Governor appoints Elizabeth Chen to community and technical college board
Posted Mar 12 - Elizabeth Chen, Federal Way, has been appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire as the newest member of the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.
Edmonds CC shares math across the curriculum expertise
Posted Mar 12 - Math instructor Deanne Leoni and Director of Grants Rebecca Hartzler co-authored "Math Across the Community College Curriculum: A Successful Path to Quantitative Literacy," and "Recipe for Faculty Development" in the February issue, Vol. 1, No. 2 of MathAMATYC Educator, The Journal of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. Biology instructor Jenny McFarland contributed "Teaching and Assessing Graphing Using Active Learning" about curriculum she uses in her classes developed in part by participation in math across the curriculum institutes.
Women’s Symposium to celebrate “100 years of triumph”
Posted Mar 11 - Edmonds Community College holds its fifth Women’s Symposium Sat., March 13 in Triton Union Building 202 at Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood. Author, educator, and poet laureate Dr. Mona Lake Jones is the featured speaker for the event. She will address participants on the theme of this year’s event, “Women: 100 Years of Triumph.” Doors open at 8:30 a.m.
Schooler named Coach of the Year: Women's Basketball heads to playoffs
Posted Mar 3 - Jennifer Schooler has been nameed Coach of the Year for the Northern Region for the 2009-10 season by the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. Schooler was also featured in February in The Herald, "Edmonds CC women go from winless to contender," about her turnaround of the team. The Women's Basketball Team is headed to the NWAACC championship playoffs. The Tritons will play in game six versus Centralia at 2 p.m., March 6, in Kennewick. Player Whitney Anderson was also named to the 2009-10 NWAACC Women’s Basketball All-Stars. For the men's team, Tyler Monroe was named to the 2009-10 NWAACC Men’s Basketball All-Stars.

Nominate an educator for the Excellence in Education award
Posted Feb 25 - The Excellence in Education award is presented by the Board of Trustees to an Edmonds Community College individual who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to excellence in education consistent with the college’s mission and goals. A gift of $500, plus $1,000 for professional development will be presented to the recipient at the employee recognition luncheon on May 7. Nominations may be made by any student, staff member or advisory committee member. Make your nomination online by March 31.
Scholarship recipients create art, music, and business blog based on Banana
Posted Feb 24 - Bethany Friesen, Mark Medema, and Olivia Yin are recipients of Edmonds CC Community Read scholarships. The Edmonds Community College Foundation will award each of the students $1,100 scholarships for their spring quarter tuition. The scholarship recipients will present projects based on the nonfiction book Banana: The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World on Tues., March 2 in Mukilteo Hall when the author Dan Koeppel speaks on campus. Koeppel will read from the book and answer questions 12:30-2 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.
Board of Trustees meet March 11
Posted Feb 23 - The Edmonds Community College Board of Trustees will meet 4:30 p.m., Thurs., March 11 in Snohomish Hall 304. The meeting will include updates from student representative Azan Jacobs, classified staff representative Patti Pollardo, and faculty representative Margaret West. The next meeting will be April 14. Edmonds Community College's trustees are: Jeannette Wood (chair), Mauri Moore, Dick Van Hollebeke, Quentin Powers, and Emily Yim.
Run of Nickel and Dimed continues Feb. 25-27
Posted Feb 23 - Edmonds Community College theater arts presents Nickel and Dimed 7:30 p.m., Feb. 25-27 at the Black Box Theatre in Mukilteo Hall. The Feb. 25 performance will be ASL interpreted. Based on the book by Barbara Ehrenreich, Nickel and Dimed is a provocative, humorous, autobiographical odyssey of survival on minimum wage in today’s America. $9 general admission and $6 students/seniors
VP of Workforce Development accepts chancellor position at college in Indiana
Posted Feb 23 - Jerrilee Mosier, Edmonds Community College's Vice President of Workforce Training and Development, will be the next Chancellor at Ivy Tech Community College – Northeast in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She assumes leadership of a four-campus district in Fort Wayne on July 1, 2010. "Jerrilee’s vision, creativity, and leadership will be missed," said Edmonds Community College President Jack Oharah. College receives $100,000 federal Watershed Education Grant
Posted Feb 17 - Whidbey Island-based Service, Education and Adventure (SEA) and Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood have received a $100,000 Watershed Education Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The educators will work together with NOAA scientists and local community organizations to provide hands-on, on the water, workshops to Washington state teachers. The workshops will be provided at no cost and include continuing education credits.
New bachelor's degree program: science teaching at CWU-Lynnwood

Free tax prep and e-file at Edmonds Community College
Posted Feb 17 - Internal Revenue Service certified accounting volunteers will prepare and e-file income tax returns for U.S. citizens and residents with incomes of less than $40,000 at Edmonds Community College. Confidential tax return preparation will be offered on a drop-in basis through March 11 and again, April 6-13 in Mountlake Terrace Hall room 212, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood. No tax preparation will be done during spring break, March 12-April 5. Assistance in several languages will be available.

Grant to train workers for the growing clean energy economy
Posted Feb 16 - Edmonds Community College, along with the Snohomish County Workforce Development Council, Everett Community College, and Cascadia Community College in Snohomish County, will help train workers as part of a new State Energy Sector Partnership and Training grant. This statewide grant will help train and place approximately 4,731 dislocated workers, veterans, at risk youth, low-income adults, and individuals with disabilities. Participants may earn certificates in energy management, commercial energy auditing, residential energy auditing, commercial light auditing, and photovoltaic installation and design. Edmonds CC offers an Energy Management degree and Residential Energy Auditor, Commercial Lighting Auditor, Energy Accounting Specialist, and Energy Efficiency Technician certificates.
Job opportunities ahead: Bookkeepers, nurses, lab technicians
Posted Feb 12 - Looking for work? Here’s something to keep in mind. The Workforce Training and Education Coordinating board recently reported that Washington state is going to need more bookkeepers, nurses, lab technicians, and aircraft mechanics in the coming years. Demand for these jobs could outstrip supply by 2013. The largest potential undersupply will be in bookkeepers, accounting assistants and other accounting professionals with a projected average annual gap of 1,350 between 2012 and 2017. Some occupations, such as nursing, are in short supply of trained applicants even in this recession.
College's top scholars are on the path to film and law school

Earn professional Information Security certifications: AccessData, CyberSecurity
Posted Jan 27 - Edmonds Community College information security instructors Steve Hailey and Mike Andrew are now AccessData Certified Examiners and the college is an AccessData Academic Program Partner. This quarter, 82 students enrolled in Digital Forensics III, CIS 293, will take the AccessData Bootcamp Course as part of their curriculum to prepare for the AccessData Certified Examiner test. Edmonds Community College is the only college in the state which prepares students for both the AccessData Certified Examiner and CyberSecurity Forensic Analyst industry-recognized certifications.
