Exceptional instructor is also a bodybuilding champ

Posted Nov 6 - In October, at the 2009 NPC Washington Ironman Championships Edmonds Community College Physical Education and Health instructor Janet Guenther took first place in the Women's Masters Over 50 and Mixed Pairs categories. She also received an Echelbarger/Sherman Exceptional Faculty Award this year from the Edmonds CC Foundation. Guenther is teaching: Sports and Fitness Lab, PE 102; Women's Body Conditioning, PE 134; Advanced Women's Body Conditioning, PE 135; Volleyball Co-Ed., PE 142; and Nutrition/Life Fitness, PE 250 at the college this winter.

Edmonds CC Foundation honors employee excellence

Posted Nov 6 - In recognition of their excellent service to the college, the Edmonds Community College Foundation presented: the Part-Time Faculty Award to Visual Communications instructor Steve Sosa, who also works in the college's Technology Resource Center; the Barbara Patterson Exempt Employee Award to Karen Norris, Executive Assistant, Human Resources; and Sherman Classified Employee Excellence Awards to Donna Curran, Senior Secretary, Business Division and Barbara Pardo, Program Coordinator, Organizational Development and Training(ODET), Human Resources.

Edmonds CC Foundation names 2009 Distinguished Alumni

Posted Nov 6 - Alan Howard, a senior engineer at Huntron, Inc. in Mill Creek, and Jeff Smoot, an attorney at Lasher Holzapfel Sperry & Ebberson law firm in Seattle, are the recipients of Edmonds Community College’s 2009 Distinguished Alumni Awards, which recognize educational accomplishment and excellence in service to the community. They will be honored 6 p.m., Thurs., Dec. 3 at a champagne reception followed by an awards ceremony in the theater lobby, Mukilteo Hall. Her article, "Build It, So They Will Come: A Community College Lecture Series Model" in the October 2009 issue, discusses how to build a successful and sustainable community college lecture series.

Board of Trustees to meet Nov. 12: Veterans, aerospace, and Triton Union on the agenda

Posted Nov 5 - The Edmonds Community College Board of Trustees will meet at 4:30 p.m., Thurs., Nov. 12 in Snohomish Hall 304. The meeting will include: the signing of a Partners for Veteran Supportive Campuses Certificate with special guest First Mike Gregoire and John Lee, the Director of the Washington Department of Veteran Affairs; the signing of a memorandum of understanding for aerospace training with Everett Community College; and consideration of a name change for Triton Union Building.

Center for Families honored as an employer of people with disabilities

Posted Nov 5 - In October, Edmonds Community College's Center for Families received the 2009 Governor’s Award for Small Public Employer in recognition of the Center's efforts to recruit, hire and promote the employment of individuals with disabilities. The award was presented by the Washington State Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues and Employment in partnership with the Washington State Business Leadership Network. Work Opportunities, which provides vocational services to people with disabilities nominated the Center for the award. The Center partners with Work Opportunities to hire employees with disabilities.

Scholarship opportunity: Apply by Nov. 16 for All-Washington Academic Team

This is a great opportunity to receive state recognition, a chance at national recognition, and a scholarship that honors your outstanding academic achievement and community service. Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship: Apply by Nov. 30

Posted Nov 4 - Apply by 2 p.m, Nov. 30 to be considered for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, a nationwide scholarship program for community college students planning to transfer to a four-year school. Edmonds Community College will nominate two students on Dec. 10 to compete for the prestigious national scholarships (those selected will have to complete an additional lengthy application which includes several essays).

Career action: Learn from experts in medical billing/medical office

Posted Nov 3 - Join us for a question and answer session with professionals and employers in the Medical Billing and Medical Office Specialist fields. The college’s Business Information Technology program hosts a Medical Information Technology Employer Panel, 3:30-4:30 p.m., Tues., Nov. 17 in Snohomish Hall 304. A panel of professionals will discuss what it takes to get hired and stay employed in the medical industry and the typical career paths to jobs in medical billing or medical office administration.

Featuring a cranky critic with a broken hip, convicts, penguins, a backstabbing actress, cockroaches, a romantic reporter, and a sincere secretary: this classic from the late 30s, by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, is still fresh and wickedly funny. Reload your EdPass at kiosks near the computer labs (cash only), at the College Store in Brier Hall, or at the Cashier’s Office.

Between the Lines release party, Nov. 18

Posted Oct 29 - Celebrate the release of the 2009 edition of the college’s art and literary journal, Between the Lines, on Wed., Nov. 18 in the Black Box Theatre. Join us at 3 p.m. for a reading and art show. Students, get a free copy of the journal! Then, at 7:30 p.m., the journal hosts a panel discussion with community artists on the value of art and artists in a down market economy as part of the college’s Conversations in the Humanities series.

Read Banana, apply for a scholarship

Posted Oct 29 - This year, the Edmonds CC Community Read is Banana: The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World, a book exploring the history of America’s most popular fruit, by nature and science writer Dan Koeppel. Three scholarships of $1,000 for spring quarter tuition are available to Edmonds Community College students who participate in the book read. Apply by 5 p.m., Mon., Nov. 30. Scholarship recipients will be announced Mon., Dec. 7. These scholarships are provided by the Edmonds Community College Foundation.

College recieves $100,000 federal Watershed Education Grant

Posted Oct 28 - Whidbey Island-based Service, Education and Adventure (SEA) and Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood have received a $100,000 Watershed Education Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The educators will work together with NOAA scientists and local community organizations to provide hands-on, on the water, workshops to Washington state teachers. The workshops will be provided at no cost and include continuing education credits.

Project H.I.R.E: Workers with disabilities, and recent job training, get job search help

Posted Oct 28 - Edmonds Community College has received $100,000 in federal stimulus funds via the state’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation to assist adults with disabilities, who are ready for full-time employment, to find great jobs.

ArtsNow: Authors share tips for writing young adult fiction

Posted Oct 27 - ArtsNow Writers Roundtables provide aspiring and emerging writers opportunities to hear from and interact with literary agents, publishers, and other industry professionals in a relaxed intimate setting. The fall Writers Roundtable is “Rewind and Update: Writing Middle Grade and Young Adult Fiction from Memory” with authors Terri Farley and Suzanne Morgan Williams, 7-9:30 p.m., Thurs., Nov. 5 at the Edmonds Conference Center, 401 4th Avenue, Edmonds.

Housing director named Employee of the Month

Posted Oct 20 - Luke Botzheim, housing director at Edmonds Community College, was named Employee of the Month for October 2009. He began working at the college four years ago. Since then, with the help of his expertise, the college has expanded its host family program and opened Rainier Place, a new on campus residence hall for 183 students.

State's community colleges launch Student Completion Initiative

Posted Oct 20 - The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) is launching the Washington State Student Completion Initiative aimed at dramatically increasing community college completion rates. The initiative, one of the most comprehensive completion efforts in the country, will launch new programs and expand successful pilot programs aimed at addressing key barriers to student success. The initiative is supported by the state Legislature, a $5.3 million investment by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and $800,000 from the Ford Foundation.

Conversations in the Humanities lecture series on in the Black Box Theatre

Posted Oct 20 - Join Edmonds Community College in 2009-2010 for a series of smart conversations about the future and how we can adapt and participate in our changing world. Conversations in the Humanities lectures, panels, and discussions will feature cultural activists including photographer Phil Borges, and marketer Marty McDonald as well as local artists, leaders, and Edmonds Community College instructors. A new monument at Edmonds CC will welcome veterans

Posted Oct 20 - Edmonds Community College will dedicate a new monument at 1 p.m., Thurs., November 5, on the hill west of Brier Hall recognizing the service of our nation’s veterans of war and welcoming them as they return to school.

Colleges' Egypt exchange program underway

Posted Oct 8 - The Northwest Colleges Egypt Initiative to provide technical training to young professionals from Egypt brought 34 Egyptian students to study for one year at Edmonds, Spokane and Whatcom community colleges. The students arrived in August for a month of Intensive ESL and then enrolled in professional certificate programs fall quarter. Edmonds Community College hosts 17 students, all Fulbright scholars, who are pursuing professional certificates in Business, Information Technology, Construction Management and Allied Health. Edmonds CC received a $1.4 million grant for international education from the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, Community College Initiative to coordinate the program.
