Math 151: Calculus I

Course Description
Math 151 is the first course in a four-quarter calculus sequence that includes Math 152, Math 153 and Math 254. Math 151 focuses on the derivative and its applications. Topics include: limits; differentiation of algebraic, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, and inverse trigonometric functions; minimization and maximization of functions; related rates; and applications.
Who should take this course?
Generally, students studying science and mathematics are required to take the 151–152–153 calculus sequence. You should consult the planning sheet for your program and consult an advisor to determine if this sequence is required.
Who is eligible to take this course?
The prerequisite for this course is Math 142 with a grade of 2.0 or higher. Students new to EdCC with an Accuplacer score high in the 80–120 range and who have a very strong high school background (high grades in math courses up to or even including calculus) may also consider taking Math 151, but any student in this situation should contact the instructor of the class for which he/she registers prior to the beginning of the quarter to determine whether or not he/she is ready for calculus. (The instructor’s permission must be obtained in order for the student to remain in the class.)
Is this course transferable?
This course transfers to the University of Washington as UW Math 124; consult an advisor or see the Transfer Center to determine transferability to other institutions.
What textbook is used for this course?
Some sections (denoted with a $ below) require chapters 1–4 of the seventh edition of Calculus: Early Transcendentals by James Stewart, and some of these sections may also require purchase of a Webassign access code; you are advised to consult your instructor before purchasing course materials. Other sections (denoted with a ! below) use Contemproary Calculus I by Dale Hoffman, available as a free PDF file, along with WAMAP (a free online homework system).
What else is required for this course?
Students are required to have a graphing calculator; the TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus is recommended.
When is this course offered?
Math 151 is offered each quarter, including Summer Quarter.
