LIBRARY INSTRUCTION
- Beginning the second week of each academic quarter, library instruction sessions are taught by library faculty at the request of faculty members who would like their students to gain knowledge about library services, library research systems and information literacy skills. These sessions range from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the depth of information the faculty member requests. Your attendance and participation as the requesting faculty member is integral to the success of your students’ learning experience within the context of your course. Therefore, your attendance at, and participation in, the library instruction session is necessary.
"Designing
Student Centered Research Projects"
Through the assignments you make,
instructors have the opportunity to develop students’ ability to critically and
appropriately seek and use information. You have the power to bring forth their
creativity and encourage their enjoyment of research and libraries.
Library instruction sessions are most successful as a collaboration between library and instructor in which:
- Students have an assignment that requires them to use the Library which they have been given in advance of the instruction session
- Class time is given to topic formulation and contextual understanding of the assignment before students come to the Library to learn about information resources
- Grades are given for the research process as well as for the final product
- Assignments entail topic and research strategy development, expose students to a variety of resources, and promote critical evaluation of information sources
- The instructor has tested the assignment to be sure it is workable and that the resources needed to complete it are available
- Instructors attend all sessions and show enthusiasm for the research assignment and the exciting information possibilities the Library has to offer
- Librarians have discussed the assignment with the instructor and have been given time to think about class needs and plan an appropriate instructional session
Information literacy knowledge and skills form the basis for lifelong learning. They are common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education. They enable learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assume greater control over their own learning. Information Literacy provides skills which enable students to:
- Understand the concepts and process of information research
- Define a research topic and develop strategies to identify and retrieve relevant information
- Understand the systems of organization found in an academic library
- Make use of a wide spectrum of information resources, including books, periodical articles, reference tools, non-print, and electronic information sources relevant to the selected research topic
- Understand and practice the strategies of database searching
- Select quality resources appropriate to stated research objectives
- Discern bias and the difference between fact and opinion
- Recognize key ideas and extract relevant information
- Document information sources using a standard bibliographic citation format such as MLA, APA, Turabian, Chicago or ISO
To

Frequently Asked Questions:
How can I find out what is currently in the library’s collection? Search the library online catalog at http://edmonds.library.ctc.edu/vwebv/searchBasic?sk=edmonds
Why place materials on reserve? Faculty place items on reserve so that all students will have the best possible access to the limited supply of materials.
What kinds of materials should be placed on reserve? Materials that are required for a class but are in limited supply.
Can I place a video on Reserve that I taped off of a television broadcast? Yes, however "off-air" tapes can only remain on reserve for ten days after they are placed on reserve. After two weeks the tapes must be erased.
How soon will materials be available to students after Faculty place reserve requests? The Reserve Technician needs 48 hours to fully process reserve items. At the beginning of each quarter more time may be required to fully process all requests.
How many copies of an item will be placed on reserve? One to six copies may be placed on reserve, depending upon the size of the class and the need. Faculty must provide the Library with all photocopies they want placed on reserve. Faculty may also put their own personal copies on reserve.
Can materials be kept on reserve from quarter to quarter? Yes, if they are going to be used each quarter. If they are not going to be used each quarter they will be returned to the faculty member or the Library shelves. Adherence to copyright regulations will be strictly enforced.
Who decides how long the materials will circulate and whether or not they may go out of the Library? The faculty member decides, but Library staff may make recommendations. Examples can range from 2 HOURS IN-LIBRARY USE to OVERNIGHT to ONE WEEK.
If a faculty member has questions about reserve materials who should they contact? Reserves Technician, call (425) 640 1530 or email lculligan@edcc.edu or the Circulation Supervisor, call (425) 640-1447 or email nlsmith@edcc.edu
