Collection Development Policy

Reference Collection:

Reference books are useful for getting quick information or for identifying other resources on a subject. It is in Reference that the user will find general and special encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, yearbooks, statistical guides, biographical dictionaries, print indexes, and atlases. The Library's Reference Collection is classified by subject, according to the Library of Congress Classification System. Though reference books can be located through the Library Catalog, it is often easier to use the classification system to identify the subject areas needed. Reference books are for library use only. The Library selects reference books that support the Edmonds CC curriculum and enhance student learning.

Circulating Collection:

Circulating books, books that can be checked out of the Library, are located in the northwest corner of the Library. This collection is classified by subject, according to the Library of Congress Classification System. Circulating books may be checked out for three weeks and renewed if they have not been requested by another patron. Circulating books are a good source of in-depth information on a given subject. The Library selects books that support the Edmonds CC curriculum and enhance student learning.

Searching the Library Catalog is the best way to find out if the Library owns a particular book, or books about a given subject, or by a certain author.

Reserve Collection:

Each quarter, faculty place material on reserve for the students in their classes. Reserve materials may be requested at the Circulation Desk counter. Students need to know the name of their instructor, the name of the class, and the title of the item. To locate materials on reserve, consult the library catalog under the tab, "Course Reserve Search". Borrowing periods for reserve materials are set by the classroom instructor. Some may be checked out and taken outside the Library and some may be designated "library use only".

ESL Circulating Collection:

The Library's ESL collection contains books and tapes for learning the English language. Materials for beginning level students are organized into three reading levels. The fiction section includes children's classics as well as easy-to-read material for adults. The nonfiction section contains books on diverse subjects, including American culture, citizenship, TOEFL, science, art, and other informational topics. Books with corresponding audio-cassettes or CD's may be found in plastic bags hanging on the round rack across from the ESL books.

Legal Reference Collection:

Statutes, court decisions and administrative codes support research for the Legal Assistant Program students and anyone else who needs information on Federal and Washington State justice. Federal documents and books on general American law are classified in KF. Books dealing with Washington State may be found in KFW. All materials in this collection are recorded in the Library Catalog. The Library's website provides access to many Web Legal Resources.

Print Periodicals:

The Library's collection of print magazines and journals is located in the southwest corner of the Library. The collection is organized alphabetically by the title of the periodical. New issues are shelved with the old and all issues may be checked out for one week.

Use the library catalog to search for a specific periodical title. The catalog record will tell you if the Library owns the periodical and which issues are in the Library's collection. Oversized periodicals are shelved at the end of the collection. In addition to its print periodicals, the Library also provides access to thousands of full-text magazine, journal and newspaper articles through its periodical databases. To find a periodical article on a particular subject, use one of these databases or the print indexes shelved in the Reference Collection.Return to top
