Simone Dunlap

Education:

B. A. Intercultural Studies, TESL certification (Trinity Western University)
M. A. American Language and Literature (University of Bonn)


Taught ESL:     Canada, Switzerland, Germany and the U.S.   My youngest student was 5 years old!


Languages:    German, French and some Spanish


Professional interests:    Writing and Cultural Studies


Outside interests:      Traveling, reading, skiing, dancing, watching movies with my friends, and discovering new art and music


What people may not know about me:

       I was a vegetarian for 10 years. Then I lived in Germany…

Linda Takushi Carlson                                     


Started teaching at EdCC:    Fall of 2006


Hometown:         Chicago, Illinois


Education:

B.A. Political Science (University of Washington)

M. A. Teaching ESL (Seattle Pacific University)


Taught ESL:       in Japan, and at Seattle Pacific University (ACE), and North Seattle Community College


Languages:        a tiny bit of Japanese and a tiny bit of German


Professional interests:      I love to teach writing because I love to write! I also love to teach grammar (maybe because I love to talk a lot?)


Outside interests:      Reading (almost anything except poetry); watching movies; swimming (my only stroke is the crawl); watching youth sports (soccer and basketball); playing with my cat and dog; hanging out with my family; volunteering at the Literacy Source in Fremont.


What people may not know about me:

  • Although I’m very short, I played basketball in high school and love to watch NBA and PAC-10 games. I love the month of March! I think in another life I shall be 5’10” and play shooting guard for Stanford. But don’t hate me; I’ll probably struggle in my math classes.

  • My middle name (my maiden name) is Okinawan.

  • I was married to a logger for 10 years and learned to run a hydraulic log loader to load logs onto trucks. (But I never learned to use a power saw correctly.)


Best part of teaching at EdCC:   My fabulous colleagues and students, and the candy from Chris!

Chuck Cox                                            

Started teaching at EdCC: 1986


Hometown:       Ballard, WA


Education:        

B. A. in Education and Sociology (Central Washington University)

M. A. in Curriculum and Instruction (ESL) (City University)


Taught ESL:     Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Japan, China, Mexico, also in the U.S. at the UW, Seattle Pacific University, Seattle U (ELS), and Edmonds Community College


Languages:  Thai, Lao, Spanish, and some Arabic


Professional interests:     Intercultural Communication and Diversity Studies, both of which I teach at the college


Outside interests:      Undoing Racism, politics, riding my motorcycle


What people may not know about me:

       I’m a great breakfast cook! Well, at least I love to eat what I create!


Best part of teaching at EdCC:     the students and teachers that I meet and work with every day.  

Kelly Roberts Weibel                           

 

Started teaching at EdCC: 1988

Hometown:   Kalispell, Montana

Education:
B. A. in Radio-TV, German and Spanish (University of Montana)
M. A. in Teaching ESL (University of Washington)

Taught ESL: Austria, Yugoslavia, and in the US at Shoreline Community College and the University of Washington.

Languages: Fluent German, good Spanish, a little Serbo-Croatian

Professional interests:

  • I love teaching Grammar—it’s FUN!
  • I’m interested in learning more uses for technology in teaching and in developing better ways to assess speaking skills.

    

Outside interests:
     Gardening, especially growing flowers; reading; watching movies; cooking, especially trying new recipes; camping; spending time with my family and friends.

What people may not know about me:

  • I rode in the Seattle to Portland Bike Ride (185 miles in 2 days!) when I was 30.
  • I am a singer at my church.
        

Best part of teaching at EdCC:
     Inquisitive students who come from many countries and wonderful colleagues in the International Division at EdCC.

Robert Kashey

 

Started teaching at EdCC: Fall, 2008


Hometown:         Seattle in now my home, but I lived in San Diego a long time.


Education:         

B. A. English, University of San Diego, California 1979.

CELTA, Bridge-Linguatec, Seville, Spain 2008


Taught ESL:     16 years in Japan & South Korea & in the USA at San Diego State University, ELS San Diego, California and now here at Edmonds Community College.


Professional interests:     Writing, Poetry, Literature. 

Outside interests:         

       Photography, Fine Art, World Cultures, Music, Religions, Cuisine, Wines, Progressive Politics (Go Obama!)… all the things some people are too shy to talk about! Yeah, I’m a real talker! I’m into hiking and camping in the mountains.     Being in the wildness is awesome!


What people may not know about me:    

       You can find one of my books online. I write and perform poetry in shadowy cafes and theaters where people drink lots of dark coffee!


Best part of teaching at EdCC:

       Teaching is a joy and a challenge, my colleagues are wonderful to work with and the high-tech classrooms are excellent.

 

Jan Peterson

 

Started teaching at EdCC:   1986                        

             

Hometown:      Omaha, Nebraska

       

Education:     

B. A. in Swedish and Psychology  (North Park College, Chicago)

M. A. in Teaching ESL (University of Arizona)

Taught ESL:   Sweden, Kenya, Yugoslavia and in the US at the University of Arizona, Arkansas State University, City University and the Unversity of Washington

Languages:   Swedish and a bit of Swahili, Serbian, and Spanish 

Professional interests:   

  • I especially love teaching grammar.      (Am I strange?) 

  • Writing ESL materials   (Published “Better Writing Through Editing,” with friend and former colleague, Stacy Hagen)

Outside interests:                                     

              Reading, swimming, seeing plays at local Seattle theaters, classical music, hiking in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter at a family cabin in Northern Idaho, spending time with my husband and two kids and friends.

What people may not know about me:

  •       I used to help with my dad’s construction company—working on the jobs, driving huge dump trucks, pouring concrete, etc.    

  •        I have 100% Swedish background.  (All of my grandparents or great-great grandparents came to the US from Sweden.)

Best part of teaching at EdCC:

              Learning from international students and working with great colleagues!
