Course Descriptions
HSPTR 104   Airline Computer Training (5 Credits)
Introduction to Apollo/Galileo a centralized commercial airline reservation system. Knowledge and skills are developed to enable a student to make a PNR, which includes selling, booking, and pricing of airline flights. 15 hours of lab work are required outside of class time.
HSPTR 111   Tour/Rail/Hotel (3 Credits)
An introduction to accommodations, tours, rail and car rentals. Emphasis on reading and analyzing brochures. Study of hotel bookings, reference materials, rail and car rentals in the US and Europe, and study of tour packages worldwide.
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement into EAP 121 or BRDGE 093.
HSPTR 112   Cruises (4 Credits)
An introduction to cruises. Emphasis on reading and analyzing brochures and pricing structures. Study of cruise lines, ships and deck plans, and itineraries worldwide.
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement in EAP 121 or BRDGE 093.
HSPTR 115   North American Geography (5 Credits)
Introduction to the prime tourist destinations in the United States and Canada. Course uses Destination Specialist (DS) texts from The Travel Institute and students have an opportunity to take a DS test and receive national certification from the Travel Institute.
Prerequisite: Minimum placement into EAP 121 or BRDGE 093.
HSPTR 116   Europe (5 Credits)
Introduction to the prime tourist destinations in Europe. Course uses Destination Specialist (DS) texts from the Travel Institute and students have an opportunity to take a DS test and receive national certification from the Travel Institute.
Prerequisite: Minimum placement into EAP 121 or BRDGE 093.
HSPTR 117   Caribbean/Mexico/Africa (5 Credits)
Introduction to the prime tourist destinations in the Caribbean, Mexico and Africa. Course uses Destination Specialist (DS) texts from The Travel Institute and students have an opportunity to take a DS test and receive national certification from the Travel Institute.
Prerequisite: Minimum placement into EAP 121 or BRDGE 093.
HSPTR 118   East Asia/South Pacific (5 Credits)
Introduction to the prime tourist destinations in East Asia and the South Pacific. Course uses Destination Specialist (DS) texts from The Travel Institute and students have an opportunity to take DS test and receive national certification from the Travel Institute.
Prerequisite: Minimum placement into EAP 121 or BRDGE 093.
HSPTR 140   Intro to Hospitality (5 Credits)
Understanding the structure and operations of the three key sectors in the industry (food and beverage, lodging, and travel), economic impact of the industry, and career options.
Prerequisite: ENGL 105 or placement in EAP 121.
HSPTR 155   Special Topics (5 Credits)
Classes, workshops or seminars of current interest in Travel.
HSPTR 156   Introduction to Lodging (5 Credits)
Introduction to management and operations in the lodging industry. Lodging terminology, role and responsibilities of the general manager, study of each hotel department, sales/marketing, discussion of chain operations, franchising, and management contracts.<$! >
Prerequisite: Placement into EAP 121 or ENGL 105 or instructor's permission.
HSPTR 157   Hospitality/Restaurant Operations (5 Credits)
Study of the functions and operations of a hospitality business. Feasibility, cost containment technique and marketing/promotion as well as corporate structures and functions are covered. Field trips are a part of this course. Students must provide their own transportation.
HSPTR 158   Lodging/Front Office (5 Credits)
An in-depth study of the functions of the front office department including guest services and relations, data and revenue management, reservations and room assignment, guest charges, payments and check-out, and night audit.
Prerequisite: Placement into BRDGE 093 or EAP 121.
HSPTR 198   Individual Project in Travel (1-5 Credits)
Selection, design and completion of project in the field of Travel. Student consults with faculty member in all aspects of the project. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: Instructor's permission.
HSPTR 205   Advanced Airline Computer Lab (5 Credits)
A review of basic Apollo entries along with advanced entries and new enhancements not covered in HSPTR 104. Cars, hotels, pricing modifiers, fill-in formats, etc. 15 hours of lab work are required outside of class time.
Prerequisite: HSPTR 104.
HSPTR 206   Airline Tariff/Ticketing (5 Credits)
Domestic rules and regulations for tariff and ticketing in accordance with ARC-Airline Reporting Corporation.
Prerequisite: HSPTR 104 and previous or concurrent enrollment in HSPTR 205.
HSPTR 207   International Tariff/Ticketing (3 Credits)
International rules and regulations for tariff and ticketing in accordance with IATA-International Air Transport Association. Explanation of NUC, monetary conversion, mileage and routing fares.
Prerequisite: HSPTR 104 and previous enrollment in HSPTR 205/206.
HSPTR 250   Event Coordination (5 Credits)
Overview of event planning including types of meetings and events, site location and suitability, logistics of the planning process, market and sales research, and careers in the event planning industry.
HSPTR 255   Special Topics (5 Credits)
Classes, workshops or seminars of current interest in Hospitality and Tourism.
HSPTR 258   Lodging Management (5 Credits)
Expand on subjects covered in HSPTR 156. Emphasis will be placed on management roles in the operations of a lodging business including, human resources, finance, marketing/promotions, and customer service.
Prerequisite: Placement into EAP 121 or ENGL 105 required. Completion of or concurrent enrollment in HSPTR 156 recommended or instructor permission.
HSPTR 260   Travel Sales (4 Credits)
An introduction to sales and customer service in the Travel industry. Emphasis on communication skills including questioning and listening. Discussion of needs of disabled travelers and travel insurance. Outcomes in oral communication, group interaction and job search.
Prerequisite: Placement into BRDGE 093 or EAP 121.
HSPTR 265   Event Planning/Best Practices (5 Credits)
Major trends and successful business practices in Event Planning/ Management; provides the knowledge and skills to be an effective and profitable event planner.
HSPTR 266   Virtual Event Planning (5 Credits)
Creation and implementation of a comprehensive virtual meeting or event. This hands-on approach allows students to create and apply their Event Planning skills before going into the workplace.
Prerequisite: HSPTR 250 or 265 or instructor's permission.
HSPTR 270   Event Planning Practicum (1-5 Credits)
Practical experience working in the event planning industry. Emphasis will be placed on assisting with projects that exist on the EdCC campus or in the outside community.
Prerequisite: HSPTR 250 or 265 or instructor's permission.
HSPTR 298   Individual Project in Travel (1-5 Credits)
Selection, design and completion of project in the field of Travel. Student consults with faculty member in all aspects of the project. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: Instructor's permission.
