Frequently Asked Questions about Scholarships
Q. How do I apply?
A. There is only one application, which must be completed online. Your completed application will be considered for all Foundation scholarships available. You must complete each and every part of the application. Incomplete or inaccurate applications will not be considered.
Q. Do I need anything else besides an application?
A. Yes, your most recent transcript is required with ALL applications. Some scholarships require letters of recommendation as well, but they can be turned in no matter the scholarship. Applications without the required documents will not be considered. All attachments to your application must be received by the Foundation office by 4:00 p.m. on April 10, 2009 - no exceptions. Include your name and student ID numbers on page one of each attachment.
Q. When are the applications due?
A. Applications must be received electronically by 4:00 p.m. on April 10, 2009 - no exceptions.
Q. How are scholarship awards determined?
A. Financial need is the initial factor in deciding whether an applicant should be considered for most scholarships.
Q. Can I receive more than one scholarship?
A. Yes, students qualify for and may receive funds from multiple scholarships but only need to apply with one application.
Q. Do I have to be a full-time student?
A. No, there are scholarships available for both full-time and part-time students.
Q. How much money is usually awarded?
A. It varies by student, scholarship and year. However, usually, scholarship awards range from $200 to $1,000. Full scholarships are rare.
Q. Do I have to have a specific field of study to qualify?
A. For some scholarships, yes; for others, no specific field of study is required. Students who haven't yet decided on a field of study are encouraged to apply.
Q. Do I need to be a United States citizen to apply?
A. No, international students as well as eligible non-citizens who are permanent residents of the United States are welcomed and encouraged to apply.
Q. If I receive an award, how do I get the funds?
A. First, you must write a thank you note and sign an agreement by the specified deadline. When the Foundation receives these items, funds will be forwarded to Edmonds Community College Student Financial Services office. All scholarships are given through the Student Financial Services. No checks are ever given directly to the students from the Foundation.
Q. How can I use the scholarship funds?
A. Funds can be used for tuition, books and fees.
Q. If I receive financial aid or help from other sources, do I still qualify for Edmonds Community College Foundation scholarships?
A. Yes, it is understood that sometimes it takes several sources of aid to be able to attend school.
Q. How long do I have to use the funds?
A. Funds will be available for one academic year, July 1 - June 30. The student will work with financial aid on the best way to disburse the funds throughout the year.
Q. If I decide not to go to Edmonds Community College this year, can I save the scholarship for the following year?
A. No, scholarships are awarded for one academic year. Any unused funds at the end of the academic year are returned to the Foundation.
Q. Are there any other requirements to receive scholarship funds?
A. Scholarship recipients may be required to meet with the donors who make scholarships possible. Recipients will be notified about the date.
In addition, recipients must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher, unless a specific scholarship requires more. If a student falls below this GPA, funds will not be released for future quarters.
