Student Financial Services

Academic Requirements:

Federal and state regulations require all financial aid recipients-including loan recipients, to maintain satisfactory academic progress (SAP) in their program of study. Failure in this will result in Probation or Termination. Probation is a warning, which remains on your financial aid record for at least two subsequent quarters you are in attendance. Termination will result in cancellation of grants and loans for any subsequent quarter. Students who fail to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress are typically placed on Probation first. Students who are on probation and again fail to complete the minimum Credit/GPA requirements will have their remaining aid terminated.

Please note: Students who have had their aid reinstated after a termination remain on probation for all subsequent quarters that they are enrolled. Probation is not removed even after two quarters of satisfactory progress. If a student fails to maintain satisfactory academic progress in any future quarter, financial aid will be terminated once again.

Below are the requirements that are considered in determining whether or not a student is maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress:

  1. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average
  2. Students must complete a minimum number of credits each quarter based on their enrollment/award status:
    • Full-time, 12 credits
    • Three-quarter time, nine credits
    • Half-time, six credits
    • Less than half time, one credit

Failure to complete at least half the minimum number of required credits will result in automatic termination-meaning there is no probationary warning. Students may also owe a repayment if no credit is earned while receiving financial aid.

  3. Grades of less than .7, I, N, U, V, and W do not count toward completed credits. ABE, ESL, GED, Family Life Education Cooperative Preschool classes and Continuing Education - BTC classes are not funded-this includes PCAPP classes offered through the Business and Training Center.
  4. The minimum number of credits to be completed per quarter must apply toward a degree or certificate awarded at Edmonds Community College
Maximum Funding Limits
  • Federal and state regulations limit the amount of funding students may receive based on the number of credits earned or attempted. Students will not be considered for aid beyond 125% of the credits required for a degree or certificate program.
  • There is a limit on the number of programs students can be funded for. Edmonds Community College will offer aid for one Certificate/ATA program and one AAS degree.
  • Up to 45 credits in remedial and prerequisite courses (those below the 100 level) are allowed if required for completion of a degree or certificate.

Students who have their financial aid terminated or who have reached the maximum credit limitation, may petition to have their aid reinstated based on extenuating circumstances. Petition forms are available in the Financial Services Office and online click “Forms” on the left.
