Records Released Without Consent


There are 13 exceptions under which FERPA allows, but does not require, release of educational records without student consent. Listed are the most common exceptions under which Edmonds Community College routinely discloses such information. Contact the Senior Associate Dean of Enrollment Services for other exceptions.

  • Edmonds Community College employee with legitimate need to know
  • Government officials for audit purposes
  • Accrediting organizations
  • Disclosure to lending institutions and government officials in connection with financial aid*
  • Compliance with judicial orders and subpoenas*
  • Health and safety emergency* (narrowly defined and usually at the discretion of the Security Office)
  • Victims of crimes of violence*
  • Directory Information (limited)
  • Disclosure to parents or guardians who can prove the student is their dependent (see section on Parent Rights)

* The college is required to keep a record of the disclosure to include date, names and reasons for exceptions. The third party must also be notified that they may not further disclose the record without the student's consent.
