1. Q: What is a medical withdrawal?

A: Medical withdrawal requests are reserved for students who are unable to complete the quarter due to a medical situation. A student can withdraw from their classes and may ask for a 100% refund if they are medically unable to complete the quarter.  See question 4 below and see the Medical Withdrawal Process sheet for complete details on requesting a medical withdrawal.

2. Q: If I am a financial aid student, do I qualify for a medical withdrawal?

A: Yes, financial aid students can request medical withdrawals. When a financial aid student requests a medical withdrawal, they will be immediately terminated from financial aid, and are required to petition for reinstatement. If a medical withdrawal is approved, the tuition and fees refund will be returned to the financial aid department. Although a refund may be issued, there is still a possibility that the student may owe a financial aid repayment.

3. Q: What are the deadlines?

A: Medical withdrawal requests are accepted until one year after the end of the quarter in which the situation took place. For example, if the situation occurred in:
  • Summer 2015, you must request a medical withdrawal by August 2016
  • Fall 2015, you must request a medical withdrawal by December 2016
  • Winter 2016, you must request a medical withdrawal by March 2017
  • Spring 2016, you must request a medical withdrawal by June 2017
If a student submits a medical withdrawal after the deadline, they will only be considered for a late withdrawal without a refund.

4. Q: What is acceptable documentation?

A: Documentation must be from a licensed medical professional and it must be specific to the quarter in which the student is requesting the withdrawal from. Please have the licensed medical professional complete the Health Care Provider Verification form. If the student is not the patient, but a caregiver, please check the appropriate box on the verification form, and have the patient’s medical provider complete the form.

5. Q: How many medical withdrawals can I request?

A: Students are limited to one medical withdrawal request per their Edmonds Community College academic history. Exceptions are made, however, a student must demonstrate that the previous medical withdrawal is unrelated. We do not accept medical withdrawal requests for two consecutive quarters.

6. Q: Can I choose which classes I can withdraw from?

A: No, medical withdrawals are reserved for students who are unable to complete the entire quarter due to their medical condition, but some exceptions can be made. Other partial withdrawal requests may only be granted for a late withdrawal without a refund.

7. Q: What if I experienced a non-medical extenuating circumstance or I cannot complete the Health Care Provider Verification Form?

A: If students cannot provide a Health Care Provider Verification Form, or experienced an extenuating circumstance that is not medical, the student may be eligible for a late withdrawal without a refund. If a student would like to request a late withdrawal without a refund, please write a detailed statement and attach a completed registration form. Submit the request to the Enrollment Services office.

8. Q: What happens if my medical withdrawal is denied?

A: Most often, medical withdrawals are denied due to the lack of specific medical documentation. If the student can follow-up with the appropriate requested documentation, our office will re-evaluate the request. If the student disagrees with the medical withdrawal decision, they can send an appeal email to the dean of Enrollment Services, Sy Ear, at saovra.ear@edcc.edu.
