Accuplacer Introduction
At Edmonds Community College, we use a placement test called Accuplacer to help you get started in the right English composition and math courses. We offer an online version of Accuplacer on campus. No appointment is needed. See testing hours for the Accuplacer test. A photo ID is required to take the test. The schedule is subject to change during the summer. For those unable to come to campus, the test can be administered remotely.
How can I take the test over the Internet?
Before you can take the Accuplacer Placement Test remotely via the Internet, you will need someone to supervise the assessment, a test proctor. Your proctor could be a school counselor/psychologist or testing center professional or a public librarian. They may not be a relative or friend. If you are serving in the armed forces, your base educational officer may proctor your test. If you are a U.S. citizen currently residing abroad, a United States Information Agency (USIA) or an employee of a U.S. consulate or embassy may be able to assist you.
The assessment must be completed in a professional setting. Your proctor will need to have Internet access and an email address where we can send instructions and passwords for your test. Although the test is not timed, most people take about 90 minutes to complete all parts and your proctor will need to observe you during this time.
Before you may test online you must first complete the Request for Remote Location Testing form and return it to us via fax or U.S. mail. Your proctor will then need to complete and sign the Proctor Security Agreement form in order to be approved to administer your test. Both are available online or by emailing testingcenter@edcc.edu.
The purpose of this placement test is to begin your journey with Edmonds Community College in classes that appropriately match your skill level. An honest appraisal of your abilities will facilitate the selection of appropriate courses and create a positive first step on you academic journey and success thereafter.

What's In the Test?
There are three main parts to the test: reading comprehension, sentence skills (grammar and punctuation), and math (arithmetic, basic algebra, and possibly some college-level math). You will not be able to use a calculator for the math portion but may work out problems with pencil and paper, taking all the time you need. You should plan to bring several pencils to the test. Your proctor will be asked to provide scratch paper. Your test results will be available to you immediately after you finish testing.

If your placement test scores show you're not yet ready for college English, you will be advised to take advantage of our Bridge classes.
