One of our strengths is that we have a collection of adjunct faculty with years of relevant field experience who teach for the Energy Management program. The students in the program have the chance to hear firsthand “real-world” information from instructors who have been in the trenches and are given the opportunity to participate in relevant applied field work.
Randy Sibley offers his expertise in the built environment with the experience that comes from owning a construction company that has been employing energy efficient/green contracting in projects. Carol and Duane Lewellen come with over 30 years experience each in the energy management field and remember and worked through the first energy crisis. They both worked for utility conservation programs in the past and continue to work with them, as well as private clients, who want HVAC and plumbing systems to be greener. Tom Barr has worked on the architecture side, designing practical application machines for use in developing countries and designing buildings that meet stringent energy codes all over the world, as well as co-founding a sustainable co-housing group/development. Larry Price brings hands-on experience related to building systems and facilities maintenance/management as well as project management (building new energy efficient buildings) in large facilities such as schools and government campuses. Alison Pugh brings her passion for sustainable business as well as her experience as the Sustainability Researcher/Administrative Services Manager here at the college. She has managed programs, created activities and chaired committees that revolve around preserving our world for the day ahead. David Butler rounds out our staff as a lighting expert, who has taught lighting, worked with manufacturers, and designed energy efficient lighting systems for both residential and commercial applications. We pride ourselves in being on the cutting edge of the green economy sharing our life/work experiences in the green jobs field and helping to grow new, passionate workers excited about the field of energy efficiency.
Alison Pugh: Energy Management Program Director and Instructor, Sustainability Researcher

Alison is one of the resident experts on sustainability at Edmonds Community College, developing green curriculum and programs as well as providing support operationally for the college to meet its greenhouse gas reduction goals and reduce the campus’ overall impact on its ecosystem. Alison has helped lead the way at EdCC since 2005, when she and other faculty brought the import of sustainability to the administration’s attention. The college’s philosophy statement shifted in 2006 to include sustainability, and the Sustainability Initiative was born. The Sustainability Council guides the initiative’s efforts, and Alison has been integral to the Council, providing leadership and support and currently serves as Co-Chair. With MBA in hand, Alison stepped in to fill a new role at the college as Sustainability Researcher, supporting the Workforce Development & Training office and the Sustainability Council’s efforts. Alison led the development of the college’s current energy management program, including convening the industry-led advisory committee, developing course sequencing within the degree and certificates to modularize “stackable” certificates leading to the degree, developing curriculum and online content, and is now leading the department as Coordinator.
Maizy Brown: Energy Management Program Assistant

Maizy is the Program Assistant for Energy Management and will be assisting the department as well as assisting in three federal grants that the department received. Maizy is a true Edmonds CC success story as she began in the GED program at the college, received her Associate of Arts degree (also from Edmonds CC), and recently graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies. In addition, Maizy has quite a bit of work experience at the college, including working with the women's programs, the counseling center, and most recently, the TRiO office.

Besides teaching, Randy is Manager and Owner of CJR Associates, a company that does commercial tenant improvement, residential remodeling, and home performance contracting. Randy has his LEED AP certification, Level One Buildings Specific Thermal/Infrared Thermography certificate, is also an OSHA authorized OSHA 10 and 30 hour trainer. He earned the Building Analyst Certification and Envelope Specialist Certification from the Building Performance Institute (BPI) in New York. Randy also holds instructor certifications in scaffold training, and Duct Testing Training for the WA state Energy Code, and has attended numerous trainings for energy auditing.

Carol has previously worked as Energy Information Coordinator, Residential Supervisor, Tank Wrap Program Manager, College Home Energy Check program coordinator , auditor trainer - all for Snohomish County PUD. She was the first Residential Conservation Specialist chosen to help start a demonstration program for residential auditing at Seattle City Light in 1978. While at City Lights and PUD, she received numerous trainings and held several other certificates in various aspects of residential conservation and program management. Carol also has experience as a Para Educator for the Edmonds School District for 13 years, and she served as a Board Member for EdCC Women’s Programs from 1987 to 2005.
Tom Barr: PT Instructor Energy Management Program

In the 1970’s, at the University of New Mexico, Tom worked on projects involving human-powered agricultural machines, wind energy, and solar-heated buildings. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador, he worked on solar crop dryers, solar water heaters, biogas digesters, wind-powered water pumps and hydraulic ram pumps. Tom assisted teaching architectural design at the University of New Mexico for a period of time, and thereafter, for 20 years, Tom worked for architectural firms specializing in health care design. He coordinated construction drawings for most aspects of institutional buildings, including building envelope, interior build-out, finishes, mechanical, electrical and construction administration. Concurrently, he collaborated as the Design Coordinator on the design of Songaia Cohousing Community in Bothell WA: small homes and common amenities in a village-like setting, supporting a low-impact, sustainable lifestyle. Tom has also taught in the zero energy tech program at Shoreline Community College.

Currently Larry is an Account Executive in the Building Efficiency Division with Johnson Controls. Previously he worked for Bellevue College, Everett Community College, and the Kent and Marysville School Districts as their Facilities Director and served 20 years as an Engineering Officer in the United States Marine Corps. Larry has a Bachelor of Science in Forest Resource Management, a Master's in Business Administration and a Master's in Adult Education. He holds Building Operator Certificate Level I (BOC Level I), HAZWOPER, and is a certified Project Manager with the Department of the Navy.

David owns David Butler Design, a lighting design consulting firm that works with architects and interior designers for residential and commercial applications, lighting manufacturers and also designs lighting for the theater and television. He has taught at both Seattle University and Southern Oregon College in theater and lighting tech. He is Lighting-Certified by the National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Professions, and is a member of IESNA (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America).
Duane Lewellen: PT Instructor Energy Management Program

Duane is principal of Rice Group, Inc., a mechanical engineering & energy consulting firm in Lynnwood. Duane has 30 years experience in the Energy Management field. He has held the positions of Energy Specialist and Energy Utilization Engineer in Residential and Commercial Conservation at Snohomish County PUD. He is a Washington State Energy Code Special Plans Examiner and Inspector, Energy Code Circuit Rider for Western Washington, and an Instructor for BOC (Building Operators Certification) and the State Energy Code Instruction and Assistance Program. He was Electric Motor Management program advisor for Washington State, and holds his LEED AP certification. Duane is a member of the International Code Council (ICC) and also is an ICC Certified Mechanical Plans Examiner, as well as an ICC Certified Energy Codes Plans Examiner.
Alex McEwen: PT Instructor Energy Management Program

Alex is an experienced teacher, teaching both face-to-face and in the online environment. He's currently managing about 70,000 square feet of facilities at the Washington Aerospace Training and Research Center (WATR) and the Employee Resource Center (ERC). Both of these facilities are managed by Edmonds Community College. He was appointed Project Manager for the WATR Center remodel and planned and directed the conversion of a 30,000 square foot facility from a fallow building slated for demolition into a state of the art aerospace training facility. He actively incorporated many cutting edge energy efficiency technologies into this project. Working closely with Snohomish County PUD, Edmonds Community College was awarded an $18,000 energy efficiency rebate for including energy efficiency measures in the conversion of the building. The project included integration of a 2kw wind turbine, motion sensors, high efficiency lighting and plans for an electric car charging station. He is currently managing phase two of the building remodel. In addition, Alex teaches at the WATR Center.
