About the 2016-17 Read and Theme
"Prayers for the Stolen" by Jennifer Clement
In Prayers for the Stolen, author Jennifer Clement tells an unforgettable story of friendship, family, and determination. Her novel is an illuminating and affecting portrait of women in rural Mexico, and a stunning exploration of the hidden consequences of an unjust war. Clement grew up in Mexico City, Mexico. From 2009 to 2012, she was president of PEN Mexico and her work focused on the disappearance and killing of journalists. Human rights issues have motivated her writing. In 2014, she was awarded the Sara Curry Humanitarian Award for her novel Prayers for the Stolen that involved over 10 years of research on the stealing of young girls in Mexico.
The Wall Street Journal calls Prayers for the Stolen "beautiful, heartrending...powerful," and the NY Times Book Review says it's "crazily enchanting."
