Diversity Studies at Edmonds Community College

Responding to the Dynamic Needs of Our Diverse Community

Our purpose: The Diversity Studies department provides students, faculty and staff with opportunities to deepen their knowledge and experiences of diversity at the college, and in the greater community, through course work focused on social and cultural structures and through diversity-focuses activities and events.

Our vision: The Diversity Studies department envisions a college which provides resources to support meaningful student learning about under-represented groups and perspectives, taught by well-trained faculty who are hired from a diverse pool of applicants.

As part of our work toward this vision, the department strives to develop and support curriculum, courses and faculty that provide our students and community with academic opportunities to examine diversity within theoretical frameworks. See Edmonds Community College's mission.

Courses examine historically excluded groups; the interconnectedness among political, social and culture systems; achievements and expression of identity; institutional oppression and dominant group privilege; and the application of analytical and experiential skills to real world situations.
