CURRENT INITIATIVES
Developing Cultural Competencies at Edmonds Community College
Edmonds Community College serves an extremely diverse community of students, employees and its surrounding communities. Not only does the College have a high percentage of international students, but it also works with students, staff and a multitude of communities of varying ethnicities, levels of socio-economic dependence and issues, levels of education, religious differences, multiple generations, returning veterans, and gender-related issues. The College must continue to be successful in its efforts by building and maintaining its capacity of cultural competencies.
The Organizational Development and Employee Training (ODET) Office, the Vice President of Instruction and the Office of Diversity Affairs will further expand these efforts by conducting a series of workshops during Winter and Spring Quarters 2010 for cohorts of college leaders, administrative staff, faculty and students to develop and enhance cultural competencies in order to more effectively meet our students’ and co-workers’ needs. These workshops will be lead by Gary Howard, president of the REACH Center for Multicultural Education.

Safe Zone
Mission: To provide safe spaces on campus that are
highly visible and easily identifiable to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) persons where support and understanding is the key and where bigotry and discrimination are not tolerated.
A Safe Zone is a place where GLBT people can feel safe and free to be open about themselves without fear of criticism or hatred. It is a place to feel supported, affirmed, accepted and valued.
This nation-wide program supporting GLBTQ individuals, was introduced to the College in 2000 and is being reintroduced in 2009.

Tyree Scott Freedom School - North Sound
Freedom School is held in the summer at Edmonds CC for youth ages 15 - 21 to learn about racism and work to undo it. We learn about why people are poor and critically look at the education system, the media, and the criminal justice system. We come together to create change and share culture.
