2006-07 College Highlights

  • The Board of Trustees selected International Education Dean David Cordell as the 2006-07 Excellence in Education Award recipient for his leadership and commitment to diversity on campus.
  • The college Foundation recognized Mary Dawes, Marc Davies and Linda Kuehnert as the 2006 Distinguished Alumni. Dawes went on to earn a docorate in counseling psychology and now works helping students at Arizona State University; Davies works as a paralegal for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office; and Kuehnert teaches chemistry at Shoreline Community College after earning a master’s degree.
  • Awarded the first six Associate in Pre-Nursing degrees to graduates ready to go on to state nursing schools. Added classes as part of a Licensed Practical Nursing partnership with Lake Washington Technical College.
  • Awarded the first five degrees to students who received state Opportunity Grants ­ for GED, Adult Basic Education, Adult High School Completion or English as a Second Language students training for employment in health care, electronics or construction careers.
  • Started a research project into ways to recruit women into science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers after receiving one of few research-based grants awarded to two-year colleges by the National Science Foundation.
  • Opened a new studio equipped with the latest recording system and added classes in audio engineering. The studio was funded by a $30,000 grant from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, $25,000 from students, and $5,000 from the Edmonds Community College Foundation.
  • Received the 2007 Service Learning and Civic Engagement Collaboration Award from the Community College National Center for Community Engagement.
  • Student volunteers helped build starter kits for homes sent to the Bayou Area Habitat for Humanity for Hurricane Katrina victims; raised $36,000 for EcoEncore, an environmental non-profit which collects and resells books; held a fundraiser to raise $5,000 for a fellow student critically injured in a pedestrian accident near the college; mentored students at South Whidbey Island High School; obtained $100,000 in tax refunds for 150 clients at the college’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site; and gave 6,000 hours of service each quarter to ten community organizations.
  • The Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges’ All-Academic Team included volleyball players Danielle Dewey and Laura Mandengue and All-Stars: men’s soccer players Garret Lowell and Spencer Huffer and women’s basketball player Keisha Beard.
  • The college Foundation started a $400,000 fundraising effort, “Imagine. Invest. Inspire.” to support important initiatives at the college to equip the new theater facility, the culinary arts facilities and the science labs, as well as to increase funding for student scholarships.
