2005-06 College Highlights
- Offered two new transfer degrees to meet the community demand for more bachelor’s degrees: the Occupational Safety and Health Technician degree transfers to Central Washington University-Lynnwood and the Associate in Pre-Nursing degree transfers directly to many universities in the state.
- Added a new degree in Information Security and three technology certificates to keep students current with business needs: Linux Security Specialist, Business Systems Analyst and Digital Forensics.
- Brought Martin Luther King III, the second oldest child of the slain civil rights leader, to visit with students and to give a public address about the pursuit of equality and justice as part of Central Washington University’s Presidential Lecture Series and the college’s evening speaker series.
- AmeriCorps member Mitzellah Ah-Fook, an active volunteer while earning her Associate of Arts degree, was one of five college students across the nation awarded the 2006 Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award for outstanding public service from Campus Compact, an organization promoting civic engagement in higher education. She will help the college purchase a special sports wheelchair with the $1,500 award.
- Started the college’s first blog, www.edcc.edu/AFTERWORDS, to give students an opportunity to share thoughts about engaging speakers and provocative topics.
- Connected students to employers with the addition of a student to business networking dinner to an annual line-up of career events, including internship and career fairs, resume and interview preparation.
- Celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Homestay Program, one of the oldest and largest in the country. Each year, more than 300 local families open their homes to Edmonds Community College international students for a shared cultural experience.
- Strengthened student success as a priority with the reopening of Mountlake Terrace Hall. The renovated building has 10 fully equipped general-purpose classrooms, a new computer lab, two new science labs and several student services.
- Provided opportunities to 526 students to participate in service-learning projects. Students repaired and painted homes and shelters, restored habitat along local streams, surveyed marine life in the Puget Sound and collected books and media to raise funds for environmental groups.
- The Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges’ All Academic Team included Edmonds CC’s baseball players Robert Grimm, Robert Han and Tyler Hauschild; softball player Brynn Noack; women’s basketball player Melanie Oakland; and men’s basketball player Andrew Pettersen. Softball coach Janessa Karstens was named Coach of the Year.
