Civic Engagement
Through its many courses and programs the college has demonstrated a commitment
to educating its students to become informed, engaged and responsible citizens
in our democratic society.
- In their coursework students learn to apply critical thinking skills
to challenging social issues; to use their knowledge of history, culture, and
social and political institutions in analyzing complex problems; to engage moral
and ethical reasoning in decision making; to value diversity in people, culture
and thought; and to work independently and collectively toward the achievement
of the shared ideals of our society.
- Students have the opportunity to unify learning and service through
an integration of course work and volunteer community service as part of the
Service Learning Program and through internship programs.
- A wide range of activities sponsored by Student Programs offers opportunities
for students to learn and practice skills of leadership and service to the college.
- The college offers its students and its community a series of challenging and inspiring guest speakers and panel discussion, over thirty events annually, including many speakers of national prominence, who share their expertise and passion on issues of critical importance.
Campus Compact
Edmonds Community College is a member of Campus Compact, a national organization that exists to promote civic purposes and service learning in higher education. As a result of this membership, AmeriCorps volunteers serve the college by coordinating our program in Service Learning. Students who are involved in this program are placed in organizations within our community to do volunteer service in fields that are directly related to their coursework. This melding of classroom education and community service has proven to be a very potent combination for developing a better educated and more involved citizenry. For further information about this program please contact Thomas Murphy at tmurphy.edcc.edu.
