Don’t repeat a class! Read this:

1. What is Common Course Numbering (CCN)?
It’s a shared system at Washington state community and technical colleges so that common classes all use the same names and numbers. It changes the name and number of many courses taken prior to summer 2009.

2. Why is this information important to me?
If you have taken classes at Edmonds CC, or another Washington State community or technical college, prior to summer quarter 2009, your class name and number may have changed. You do not want to accidentally repeat the same course.

3. What does this mean to me as a student when choosing classes for my degree or certificate?
If you have taken a class at a Washington state community or technical college before summer 2009, you need to check the Course Change List in the CCN Student Handbook or online at www.edcc.edu/ccn to ensure you do not accidentally repeat a class because of a course number/title change.

4. How will I know if a class I’ve taken has a new name or number?
Common courses have an ampersand “&” after the course prefix. For example, ENGL 105 is now ENGL& 101. See the list in the CCN Student Handbook and online at: www.edcc.edu/ccn.

& – A common course identifier recognized among Washington state community and technical colleges

Not all courses have changed! See the Department and Course Prefix List in the CCN Student Handbook to determine if you need to consult the Course Change List.

5. Does this affect how classes transfer to a university?
No. Common course numbers and titles simplify transferring credit between community and technical colleges, not between community colleges and four-year schools.

6. If courses aren’t on the Course Change List, will they still transfer?
Yes. Classes that transferred prior to CCN will continue to be transferable, whether they are common courses or not. However, it is always recommended that you check with the receiving institution. The acceptance of classes is up to your new school.

7. How will this be reflected on my Edmonds CC transcript?
For classes taken prior to summer quarter 2009, you’ll still see the old name and number. That’s why it’s important for you to check—when choosing your next classes—to be sure you’re not signing up for a class that you’ve already taken that simply has a new name or number!

8. Does Common Course Numbering affect how I register online?
The online registration process is the same. However, it won’t automatically stop you from registering for a class you’ve already taken under another prefix, number, or title. Be sure to check the Course Change List in the CCN Student Handbook to prevent this from happening.

When using the online schedule planner, you will need to add the ampersand “&” symbol to the common courses as they are listed in the schedule. For example, CMST& 210 (not CMST 210).
