Course Descriptions

BSTEC 100    Computer Keyboarding (4 Credits)

Introduction to the computer keyboard. Speed and accuracy development; keyboard compositions and introduction to e-mail; formatting letters, reports, and memos. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: If English is not your first language, placement into EAP 100 is required.

BSTEC 102    Document Processing I (1-4 Credits)

Application of word processing to format letters, reports, memos, and other business documents.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 100 and 109, or equivalent, and knowledge of Microsoft Word.

BSTEC 103    Document Processing II (1-4 Credits)

Application of word processing to format letters, reports, memos and other business documents.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 102 and 109 or equivalent, and knowledge of Microsoft Word.

BSTEC 104    Medical Terminology (3 Credits)

Study of basic medical terminology: prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining word forms, special endings, plural forms, abbreviations, and symbols. Emphasis is placed on spelling, definition, usage, and pronunciation.
Prerequisite: BRDGE 093 or EAP 100.

BSTEC 105    Windows Fundamentals (1-3 Credits)

Learn Windows terminology, features, and commands that are helpful when using Window-based applications. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 130 or CIS 100. Minimum English placement into EAP 100.

BSTEC 106    Medical Billing (5 Credits)

Collect, analyze, and apply patient billing information to insurance billing forms within current governmental guidelines.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 104.

BSTEC 107    Business English (5 Credits)

Review parts of speech, sentence structure, subject/verb agreement, punctuation, capitalization, number usage, and language usage in professional business writing.
Prerequisite: Placement into BRDGE 093 or EAP 100.

BSTEC 108    Business Presentations (5 Credits)

Introduction to techniques used in all sectors of the business community to convey a variety of information to professional and non-professional audiences. A module to guide the creation and use of PowerPoint slides is included in the course content.
Prerequisite: English placement score of 37 and an Accuplacer Reading score of 78. BSTEC 100is strongly recommended.

BSTEC 109    Word Processing (Word) (5 Credits)

Word processing functions and applications using Microsoft Word. S/U grade option. Keyboarding speed of 30 wpm.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 130 or CIS 100 or equivalent.

BSTEC 110    Business Communications:CD (5 Credits)

Memos, letters, reports, and oral presentations using business style and strategy. Revision of writing, group interaction, and diversity are emphasized, as well as written and oral communication.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 107 or instructor permission or ACCUPLACER reading/writing score of 80/85. Keyboarding recommended.

BSTEC 112    Medical Document Processing (1-3 Credits)

Medical document processing techniques and skills necessary for a medical document processor/transcriptionist in a medical office, hospital, or an extended care facility.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 104 and 109. Concurrent enrollment or prior completion of anatomy and physiology recommended.

BSTEC 113    Medical Transcription (1-7 Credits)

Introductory course, utilizing the SUM Beginning Medical Transcription Program, is designed to provide students with specialized training in medical transcription techniques.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 112 and a keyboarding speed of 45 wpm.

BSTEC 115    Medical Law and Ethics (3 Credits)

Introduction to legal, moral, and ethical issues in health care professions.
Prerequisite: EAP 100 or BRDGE 093.

BSTEC 116    Advanced Terminology and Anatomy (3 Credits)

Continuation of BSTEC 104. Advanced medical terminology, includes prefixes, suffixes, roots, and terms related to body systems and biological conditions, with anatomy and physiology focus. BSTEC 104 or instructor's permission.

BSTEC 118    Medical Coding (5 Credits)

Introduction to CPT, ICD-9-CM and Level II HCPC's coding systems. Medical topics related to Medicare fraud and abuse, as it relates to coding and payment collection in any medical setting. HIPAA issues to privacy, security and transaction code sets will be introduced. prerequisite: BSTEC 104 or instructor's permission.

BSTEC 120    Ten-Key Applications (4 Credits)

Ten-key speed and accuracy and basic math concepts. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement into EAP 100 or BRDGE 093.

BSTEC 127    Ten-Key Skillbuilding (3 Credits)

Improve speed and accuracy using the computer ten-key pad. For students with previous ten-key and basic business math experience. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 120 or equivalent.

BSTEC 129    PC Basics (3 Credits)

For the computer beginner. Basic word processing, spreadsheet, and computer concepts. Keyboarding speed of 15-20 wpm recommended. No previous computer experience required. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: If English is not your first language, placement into EAP 100 is required.

BSTEC 130    Computer Fundamentals (5 Credits)

Introduction to computer concepts, applications, XHTML and the Internet using Windows and Microsoft Office including Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint. Students may receive credit for either BSTEC 130 or CIS 100, but not both. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 100 or equivalent and minimum English placement into EAP 121 or BRDGE 093.

BSTEC 142    Quick Course Word (1 Credit)

An overview of basic word processing features using Microsoft Word 2007. Introduction to commands, formats, printing Word documents. Previous computer experience in the Windows environment recommended. S/U grade option.

BSTEC 143    Quick Course Excel (1 Credit)

An overview of basic spreadsheet features using Microsoft Excel 2007. Introduction to commands, formats, and printing spreadsheets. Previous computer experience in the Windows environment is recommended. SU grade option.

BSTEC 144    Quick Course Access (1 Credit)

An overview of basic database features using Microsoft Access 2007. Introduction to commands, formats, and printing databases. Previous computer experience in the Windows environment recommended. S/U grade option.

BSTEC 145    Web Features (2 Credits)

Introduction to HTML and the Web features of the Microsoft Office 2007 Suite. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 130 or CIS 100.

BSTEC 153    Pharmacology (3 Credits)

Discussion of physiological indications for drug intervention. Importance of proper drug dosages and guidelines in working with people receiving common drug therapies and drug effects on body systems, drug interaction, and management of acute conditions of substance abuse.
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement into EAP 100 or BRDGE 093.

BSTEC 155    Special Topics (1-5 Credits)

Seminars and classes of current interest in Business Information Technology. S/U grade option.

BSTEC 161    Legal Terminology (3 Credits)

Introduction to legal words, definitions, synonyms, pronunciation, and usage.

BSTEC 162    Legal Document Processing (1-3 Credits)

Production of documents used in the legal field. Final application requires students to convert legal documents to Washington State specifications.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 109 and LEGAL 205 or their equivalent.

BSTEC 170    Proofreading and Editing (3 Credits)

Designed to improve proofreading and editing skills. Find and correct mistakes, clarify ideas, and apply the rules of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word usage. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: Recommend BSTEC 107.

BSTEC 175    Filing Rules (3 Credits)

Introduction to basic rules of filing, indexing, and alphabetizing. The tutorial complies with the filing rules of the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA).
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement into EAP 100 or BRDGE 093.

BSTEC 198    Special Topics (1-8 Credits)

Special courses and topics may be designed for students' individual programs in Business Information Technology. S/U grade only.
Prerequisite: Permission of lab instructor.

BSTEC 199    Special Projects (1-5 Credits)

Individual projects in Business Information Technology and related topics by arrangement and permission of the instructor. S/U grade option. Note: Credit available with approval.

BSTEC 200    Keyboard Skill Building (3 Credits)

Intensive accuracy and speed building to improve keyboarding skill. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 100 or instructor's permission. Keyboarding speed of 25 wpm recommended. Minimum English placement into EAP 100 or BRDGE 093.

BSTEC 206    Intro to Medical Records (5 Credits)

Introduction to the use of medical records in a hospital or clinical setting. Students will learn to locate, analyze, abstract and index administrative and clinical data and describe licensing/ accreditation requirements for hospital records.

BSTEC 209    Desktop Publishing (1-3 Credits)

Fundamentals of desktop publishing using Microsoft Publisher. Prior keyboarding and word processing recommended. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement into EAP 100 or BRDGE 093.

BSTEC 210    Microsoft Outlook (4 Credits)

A comprehensive study of basic and advanced email and task management functions using Microsoft Outlook for Windows. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement into EAP 100. BSTEC 109 or previous computer experience in the Windows environment is recommended. Must have Outlook 2007.

BSTEC 211    PowerPoint Projects (1-4 Credits)

Introduction to essentials of presentation graphics using Microsoft PowerPoint. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 130 or CIS 100.

BSTEC 213    Advanced Word (4 Credits)

Comprehensive study of the advanced functions of Microsoft Word 2007.

BSTEC 218    Advanced Medical Coding (5 Credits)

Advanced study of coding and clinical record requirements. Emphasis is on practicing code assignments for a variety of medical services and ensuring accurate assignment of CPT, ICD-9-CM and Level II (HCPCS) codes.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 104 and 118.

BSTEC 222    Database (Access) (5 Credits)

Basic database functions using Microsoft Access 2007. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 130 or CIS 100 or equivalent.

BSTEC 223    Advanced Access (3 Credits)

Advanced database functions of Microsoft Access 2007. Create a database, work with subforms, integrate data, and use macros. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 222 or instructor's permission.

BSTEC 224    Spreadsheet (Excel) (5 Credits)

Basic and intermediate spreadsheet functions using Microsoft Excel. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 130 or CIS 100 or equivalent.

BSTEC 225    Advanced Excel Projects (5 Credits)

Advanced spreadsheet functions of Microsoft Excel. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 224 or equivalent, and BUS 130 or ACCT 101 or equivalents.

BSTEC 226    Internet Systems Applications (4 Credits)

Fundamentals of the WWW using Internet Explorer, FireFox or Netscape Navigator. Proficiency in Internet Skills: on-line research, effective browser techniques, and downloading programs and files. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement into EAP 100 is required. Previous Windows experience is recommended.

BSTEC 233    Dental Office Management (5 Credits)

Front office skills: Covers practice-management strategies, interpersonal skills, managing clinical records, dental billing, terminology and dental HIPAA/OSHA/WISHA regulations; appropriate for employment and current dental office staff.
Prerequisite: Placement into EAP 121 or BRDGE 090.

BSTEC 240    Administrative Procedures (5 Credits)

Role of the administrative professional in today's business. Topics include time management, records management, telephone and e-mail communications, travel arrangements, and meeting and conference planning.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 102 or 109.

BSTEC 243    Adv'd MS Office Projects (4 Credits)

Advanced course for students familiar with Microsoft Office programs. Create and integrate Word, Excel, Access and Power Point documents to build a professional portfolio. S/U grade option.
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement into EAP 100. BSTEC 109 and 224 or equivalent.

BSTEC 245    Advanced Business Communications (5 Credits)

Introduction to written methods of technical communication used in all sectors of the business community. Covers writing policies, procedures, report proposals, and process descriptions.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 110 and 130 or CIS 100. Accuplacer writing score of 82 and reading score of 78. BSTEC 100 is strongly recommended.

BSTEC 255    Special Topics (1-5 Credits)

Seminars and classes of current interest in Business Information Technology. S/U grade option.

BSTEC 260    Leadership/Mgt Skills:CD (5 Credits)

Introduction to office and employee management. Topics include leadership and communication skills that are necessary to work in a diverse office environment and participate in a global economy.
Prerequisite: BSTEC 110 or instructor's permission.

BSTEC 294    Career Management (3 Credits)

Assess employment skills, develop a resume and letters of application, videotape employment interviews, and job search strategies. Includes development of a portfolio. Should be taken prior to BUS 290 and within last 2 quarters of the program.
Prerequisite: Minimum English placement into BRDGE 093, EAP 121.

BSTEC 299    Special Projects (1-5 Credits)

Individual projects in Business Information Technology and related topics by arrangement and permission of the instructor. Note: Credit available with approval.
