The opening of a new exhibit in MLT hall showcases Jennifer Inslee’s English 100 students captured by four of Michael Wewer’s photography students. During the opening of the exhibit, Peter Schmidt (Senior Associate dean of Student Affairs) shared his excitement that the once blank wall near his office is filled with portraits of students. Jennifer Inslee also mentioned to me that those weeks before the exhibit open, she would watch from a distant the reactions of people reading the essays. She notes that she’s very protective of the displays since she knows how hard her students work on them.
This exhibit is great collaboration between two different departments working together towards a common goal of expressing the students’ stories. With the success of this project, this may encourage more professors to explore other collaboration. This momentum may encourge more service-learning classes on campus.
The Center for Service-Learning with grant from Promising Practices and Congressional District Action Team grants from Washington Campus Compact and Learn and Serve Higher Education program of the Corporation for National and Community Service will fund the phase two of Profiles in the Art of Living project for next year. This wonderful project is a great way to showcase our students and acknowledge them for what they’ve accomplished so far. That is the key to any retention projects.
