“We all arrived a little sleepy on that Saturday, but ready to begin our tree planting for Earth Day. We began with some snacks, and a brief introduction to what we were doing that day. We were helping the Stilly Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force, recreate a native environment for Portage Creek, and its surrounding habitat. By planting native trees you help prevent bank erosion, improve the neighboring soil, provide shade and nutrients for the fish and other wildlife, and create a lusher environment.
The sun began to shine, and we were getting muddier by the moment. While planting the trees, my classmates and I tried to identify them before we put them into the ground. We mainly planted cottonwoods, nine barks, western red cedars, Sitka spruce, and the Douglas fir.
It was a wonderful “hands on” learning experience!
I will never forget this Earth Day!”
