STEM Education and Careers
SCIENCE * TECHNOLOGY * ENGINEERING * MATH
Edmonds Community College prepares students to excel in higher education and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. Working closely with universities and employers, the college plays a key role in helping Snohomish County’s students meet the demand for an educated workforce in fields such as engineering, biotechnology, computer science, and chemistry. In education classes, the college also works to prepare future teachers in preschools and elementary schools to pass on an affinity for math and science to the next generation.

Excellent preparation for science students
Earning the two-year Associate of Science degree at Edmonds Community College, prepares students to complete a bachelor’s of science. Students will enter universities as juniors as well prepared as classmates who started at those schools as freshmen. Edmonds Community College transfer students may also have had some opportunities unique to the community college environment, which offers a strong teaching focus and smaller class sizes. Students may get more face time with instructors and have opportunities to work in labs with advanced equipment earlier in their academic careers. National reputation and leadership in math and science
Particularly within certain fields, Edmonds Community College has made a name for itself as a leader and innovator. These fields include materials science/composites, math curriculum, and information security/digital forensics. The college’s 10 National Science Foundation grants show national acknowledgement of Edmonds Community College’s teaching excellence. With these grants the college helped found national organizations including the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges and a National Resource Center for Materials Technology. Edmonds Community College was also tapped to research ways to bring more women into science, technology, engineering, and math studies.
Unique opportunities for scholarship and experience
Edmonds Community College’s leadership in these fields brings its students a number of unique programs and opportunities. Students may choose to get on the fast track to higher-paying jobs by beginning their science studies with a chemistry laboratory technician, aerospace manufacturing, materials science or computer information systems degree — all of which afford students paths to continue on to further studies. Built with the input of local businesses, the college’s programs help put students in touch with professional organizations and future employers. They also give students a chance to apply what they’ve learned. Engineering students have built and raced submarines and racecars and digital forensics students have worked on actual cases and interned at the state attorney general’s high-tech crime unit.
